Remembering the World Trade Center
Union Square Vigil & Lower Manhattan Memorials
14 September 2001
New Yorkers gather in Union Square for vigil for the victims of the WTC attack.
Every surface around Union Square becomes covered with candles.
A metal sculpture of the American Flag is carried to the vigil.
A child in mourning lays a candle on a highway divider at Union Square.
A woman kneels to pray among the candles memorializing the lives lost.
The rim of a dumpster, a makeshift monument, drips with wax.
All over the city, phone booths become billboards for missing persons flyers.
On Sixth Avenue, a pizzeria lends itself to the city’s mourners.
An island in Houston Street provides another reminder of the tragedy.
New Yorkers honor their lost firefighters outside Engine Co. 24 in SoHo.
Even a damaged water fountain participates in the vigil.
Flags are hung everywhere in Manhattan; Sixth Avenue near Spring Street.
Another flag hangs from an office building near Canal Street.
Heavy equipment lines nearly every street in the Staging Area north of Ground Zero.
New Yorkers create an impromptu memorial on Canal Street.
The smoke rises as Ground Zero glows; before Tuesday, the towers were visible from this spot.
